The Kern County Chapter of California Turtle and Tortoise Club is a non-profit 501-c organization devoted to educating people on the health, care, maintenance and well being of all turtles and tortoises. In light of our proximity to the Mojave Desert, our primary focus is of course on the threatened Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) and learning to keep it in the best simulation possible of it's natural habitat. The club and its members have a long term concern and commitment for these animals, thus the creation of this website to bring exposure to the organization, our cause and purpose. Many club members also have numerous other species of turtles and tortoises. We believe in the proper care of all animals and their species. Every animal has the right to be treated with respect and kept in an environment or habitat that is suitable for its living and survival needs. By no means should any one information system be the sole source for the care and maintenance of an animal. Several sources should be used to help determine the most accurate and healthy way to maintain a species. The information contained in the links to care sheets is, by group consensus, the best information that is available at this time. NOTE: The care sheet presented via www.donsdeserttortoises.com is the Desert Tortoise Care sheet we hand out in Kern County with adoptions.
