Neiman Marcus Cookies
I assume that most people have heard this story (or some version of it) but I will post an abbreviated version of it anyway - just in case. Supposedly, a woman was having lunch at an eatery in a Neiman Marcus Department Store. After lunch, she ordered dessert and sampled some of the restaurants' cookies. She loved the cookies so much, she asked the waiter if she could have the recipe. The waiter told her she could have it but that it would cost "two fifty". The woman told the waiter to put it on her Neiman Marcus charge. A few weeks later, when she received her bill, she was startled to find out that she was charged $250 for the recipe and not $2.50 as she'd thought. She telephoned the store to inquire and they told her that $250 was the correct amount and that they would not reverse the charge - even if she gave the recipe back (as she'd already seen it and could've written it down). The woman decided then to distribute the recipe in mass quantities to everyone and anyone so as to get her money's worth. I have no idea if this is a true story or not, but I do know that the cookies are fantastic! I've cut the recipe in half as the original made dozens and dozens. Enjoy!
